A waterproof cosmetic bag is not a bag made of waterproof material. It is a chain of four links, and the pouch holds water only as long as the weakest one does. The panel is usually the strongest part: a coated cloth or a laminated film will resist a head of water that no seam on the same pouch can match. The failures happen at the seam, at the zip and at the small hole where a rivet or an eyelet passes through, and all three are decided before the first pouch is cut.
This guide covers the four links in that chain, what a hydrostatic head figure actually measures, why the zip is the part that decides the product, and the five lines that turn a water-resistant pouch into one that can be described as waterproof.
The four links are ordered from strongest to weakest, which is also the order in which they are usually specified and the reverse of the order in which they matter.
The table shows how the four links compare and what each one needs to stop being the weakest point.
| Link | Typical performance | What it needs to hold | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panel | 2,000–5,000 mm hydrostatic head | A coating weight heavy enough to stay continuous at a fold | Cracking at a crease rather than leaking through the cloth |
| Seam | Zero with a raw sewn seam | Tape, weld or a bound and sealed finish | Wicking along the stitch line into the pouch |
| Closure | Splash-proof up to a few hundred mm | A coated zip tape or a welded seal, plus a storm flap | Water tracking along the tape and through the slider gap |
| Penetrations | Zero without a gasket | A sealant washer or relocation above the water line | A slow seep that shows as a damp base after a flight |
Each of the three below turns a sensible-sounding material choice into a product that leaks in a way nobody expected.
A hydrostatic head figure is the height of a water column that a fabric resists before it passes water, and it is measured on a flat sample under pressure rather than on a sewn pouch. That means the figure describes the panel and says nothing about the assembly, which is why a pouch made from a 5,000 mm cloth with an untaped seam leaks in a handbag. Read the number as a material property, and ask separately how the seams and the closure are finished. The two answers together describe the product; either one alone describes a sample.
Every waterproof pouch has one deliberate hole and it is closed by a zip, which means the closure sets the standard for the whole product. A standard nylon zip lets water track along the tape and pass through the gap at the slider. A water-resistant zip adds a coated tape and a tighter weave; a waterproof zip adds a sealed tape and a slider designed to close the gap. A storm flap over the zip helps against rain and does nothing against standing water. On a pouch that will sit in a wet bag, the closure is the line item to spend on, not the panel.
A coated cloth does not close around a needle the way a felted wool does, so every stitch leaves a passage through the coating. On a pouch that has to resist water, seams are taped or welded, and hardware is either sealed with a washer or moved above the level the water is expected to reach. Where a rivet is unavoidable, a neoprene or silicone washer behind it converts a hole into a seal; where it is decorative, removing it is cheaper than sealing it.
Fill it with tissue and leave it in a wet bag
A hydrostatic test on a flat sample cannot find a seam problem, and a visual inspection cannot find a slow seep. Put dry tissue inside the sample, close it, put it in a wet plastic bag with a little water, and leave it in a warm place for four hours. Then open it and look at the tissue at the corners, at the zip ends and around any rivet. Damp tissue at a specific point names the failing link better than any laboratory figure applied to the wrong part of the product.
Water resistance is a chain, so the specification has to name every link or the weakest one is chosen for you.
Water-resistant pouches are built inside the custom spec bag programme, and a finished reference with a clear welded body is the clear portable toiletry bag. Where a pouch takes a webbing handle or a sealing tab, the trim comes off the nylon webbing line woven to 2000N+ break strength, and the testing page lists the abrasion and fastness methods applied to it.
It is the height of a water column the fabric resists before water passes through, measured on a flat sample. It describes the panel only, so it says nothing about the seams or the zip.
Not without something over it. A sewn seam is a line of holes, and water follows the stitch. Tape applied under heat, a welded seam or a bound and sealed finish are the three routes that close it.
A welded film pouch with a welded seal can be, and it behaves like a dry bag rather than a cosmetic bag. For a zip pouch, the realistic description is water-resistant to a splash, and the closure is what limits it.
Because that is where water collects and where the base seam sits. It is also where a rivet or a base stud usually lands, so the two weaknesses are in the same place.
If the outer is a coated cloth, a light lining protects the coating from the inside, which is what wears through first when bottles rub at the base corner. A welded film pouch needs no lining at all.
A waterproof cosmetic bag is a chain of four links and it holds water at the weakest one. Name the panel figure, tape or weld every seam, specify the closure by class rather than by appearance, and list every rivet with its seal. Four lines, and the word waterproof stops being a description of the material and becomes a description of the product.
Fifteen years of weaving narrow fabric, much of it for products that keep water out, is why a waterproof cosmetic bag is specified here in figures rather than adjectives. The trim that becomes a handle, a hang loop or a sealing tab is woven in Dongguan to 2000N+ break strength, dyed on a continuous high-temperature line, and tested in-house past 50,000 Martindale cycles and 1,000 hours of UV. Share the pouch's worst case — a spill, a shower or a swim — and we come back with a matched sample.
